Dearest,

You are glorious and I hope you really understand that. You do not need a therapist to help you figure your place in the world. You are special and unique and fabulous in a whole host of ways that are worth a much longer conversation. To be continued ...

Have been having a few email problems as I am getting email through an aircard at the farm, where access to computer world is more than tough. Please let me know if you have gotten my last two eamils (sic) so I know it is working in getting to your part of the world ...

Another glorious day outside. Hope you are doing well, and am anxious to hear about your week. Know that I miss you. Unbeleivably (sic) hard to imagine it has been a week. Please also send your mailing address as I want to send you an insignificant something next week when I am back in civilization that I think you might find interesting given our conversation.

Want to write an indepth note with some thoughts on our visit when I know you are getting these emails. Hugs and much love. M

My beloved, (hope you also change the dearest ...)

I’am (sic) reading your last two mails sitting outside with a great seaview here in Ilhabela, a beautiful island near Sao Paulo. Have been thinking of you while watching the beautiful blue sea (a) great part of my day and remembering with a great smile on my face, the time we had spent together. As I told you before, you brought happiness and love to my life and (I) will take you forever in my heart. I wasn’t aware till we met last week, the strong feelings I had for you, and believe me, I haven’t felt this since I was in my teen ages, when afterwards I got married. I do love you, I can feel it in my heart, and although I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to meet again this has been the best that has happened to me in a long time You made me realized (sic) how you feel when you realy (sic) love somebody and how much you want to be beside the beloved. Last Friday I would had stayed embrassing (sic) and kissing you forever.

Don’t know why you think you bore me with the description of your farm. I am an urban girl but that doesn’t inhibit me from loving other things, specially if they are the ones you love. I was able to imagine the place with every single detail you wrote and had trassmitted (sic) me the love you have for your farm. It sounds to be a great and peaceful place and loved you had shared it with me.

Thanks for your beautiful words, I don’t know if I do need or not therapy but I have to find my new place in this new stage of my life. Life has been very generous with me and I want to return at least a little bit of what I have been given. I have time and think helping others who haven’t been as lucky as me will do me fine.

My address is (deleted by The State). It will be great finding at home once I am back, whatever you send me, I’ll keep it near my bed so as to feel you nearer.

Miss you so much... love you from the deepest of my heart. Sweet kisses.

But wait! There's more to read here!

How to End the Great Depression in July

You may have heard of the Google flu project. Google found that it could track flu outbreaks by tracking Google searches for flu. It seems Google tracking of the flu was as accurate as CDC tracking, but came 1-2 weeks earlier. I tried the same analysis with fishing. Tracking searches for trout showed spikes in trout season. Walleye searches correspond to the weeks in late spring, early summer when walleyes are biting. But what would a trend analysis of searches for "Great Depression" show? You might think it would be a flat line until recently, and in fact, there have been significant spikes lately, but look at this chart:

Look at the incredibly regular and seasonal patterns! Concern about the Great Depression regularly diminishes in the summer, increases in the fall, drops briefly after Christmas, then returns in the winter and spring. This might mean that if Obama is looking for the right time to convince people that the worst is over, and that they should try spending again, he should wait until late June, and then hope for the best over the next two months. Concerns will return, of course, but perhaps by then the real crisis will have passed.

How's Your German?

Wikileaks just published a document from a Bundestag investigation into CIA blacksites in Germany, and detainee transfers via Germany. The 21 Mar 2008 report, by Dr. Joachim Jacob, is classified as a classified document - for official use only, and presents an excerpt of 26 pages from the 132-paged final report.

The report gives detailed information about an official investigation into US military transports of detainees via Germany and also the incarceration and mistreatment of US detainees on German soil. It is particularly relevant to the investigation into the US military prison in Mannheim, which is ongoing and receiving attention from German politicians and the media.

One problem: the report is in German. So, if anyone out there would like to translate it into English, we would all be grateful.

Congressional Campaign Donations Dry Up!

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies just posted on their website this apology to thousands of people who actually had tickets to the inauguration, but were shut out of the ceremony by the Capitol Police:

Washington, DC—The 56th Inaugural Swearing-in Ceremony was the largest event in Washington, DC history. Months of planning by the staffs of the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives, the Office of the Architect of the Capitol, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the United States Secret Service resulted in an extraordinarily successful and peaceful event that was enjoyed by well more than a million people.

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies deeply regrets that some ticket holders to the ceremonies were not able to get to their ticketed sections, primarily in the purple and blue zones. The number of tickets issued for these sections was based on historic precedent, and calculations of the number of guests that could safely be accommodated in each area.

Many of the problems appear to have been due to the unprecedented crowds, and a huge flow of unticketed people toward the U.S. Capitol and into the 3rd Street Tunnel from the National Mall, after it had reached capacity very early that morning and was closed to additional unticketed entries.

The JCCIC, U.S. Capitol Police and our federal and local partners will thoroughly examine every aspect of our planning including ticketing, screening, pedestrian flows, gate numbers and placement, to provide a foundation of lessons learned to future inaugural planners, so that they have the information they need to prevent similar problems.

We realize how important this inauguration was to so many people and the difficulties they endured to get here, so once again we deeply apologize to those guests who were not admitted.

Clinton Contributors

No doubt you were one of the thousands of people who jammed the website of the Clinton Foundation trying to access the list of Saudi oil barons who contributed millions to the Clinton Foundation seeking favor with the ex-President. Trouble was, their server couldn't keep up with the traffic, and even if you did get through you found that the data was spread out over some 2,000 different web pages. Ridiculous!

Well, if you gave up trying, I have compiled a convenient .pdf file -- one file -- with the list of everyone who gave over $100,000. No more waiting for thousands of web pages to load. Click on the link below.

Buying, Instead of Bailing Out, GM

This week, Congress will consider spending $50 Billion or more bailing out the failed management of General Motors. These are the same guys that gave us the Hummer instead of the Prius, that still believe that global warming is a hoax, that dug in their heels at the suggestion of higher CAFE standards. These are clowns that need to be fired, and a bailout does nothing to effect that change. But there is a way to get them out that costs a lot less. Congress, you should buy GM.

Current market capitalization of General Motors is just $1.8 Billion. That's right, for less than $2 Billion, you can buy the whole damn company, lock, stock and barrel. For just $2 Billion you get to fire the senior management, replace the board of directors, renegotiate the labor contracts, and fundamentally reshape the auto industry in this country. Why in the world would you spend $50 Billion to continue the same failed business models when you can turn this industry around with a small fraction of that amount?

Rope-A-Dope

The Obama campaign must read the NY Times. The day before the last Presidential debate, the Times ran a story that explained that McCain's negative ads, which is to say all of his ads, have been backfiring on him. Voters are not responding to his attacks, and they are leaving him in droves while he attacks Obama for his tangential relations with Bill Ayers and Acorn. So what does the Obama campaign do? They bait McCain. "Say it to my face", they challenged McCain. And McCain fell for it. For 90 minutes, McCain went on the attack, and Obama just smiled. Every time McCain went on the attack, Obama knew he was gaining more independent voters, and solidifying his hold on the White House. To coin a phrase, we now know who will win the election November 4th.
